What-is-ativan-withdrawal

Ativan withdrawal symptoms are painful and require a long taper. Understanding this class of drug and its affects on the body are important. Ativan is a short acting benzodiazepine similar to Xanax. Its’ main function is to provide relief for patients struggling from anxiety, panic disorders, sleep disorders, stress disorders. Other similar medications in the benzodiazepine family include Klonopin, Xanax, Valium, and Librium.

These medications all act on the GABA receptors of the brain creating a calming effect. Gaba receptors are the break pedal that regulate the nervous system. Benzodiazepines affect the body is several keys ways.

  • tend to slow the heart rate down
  • decrease rapid breathing
  • increase euphoria creating a calming effect
  • decrease anxiety and panic

Users that take them for anxiety and panic disorders tend to describe it as making them feel “normal” again. Eventually many users prescribed to Ativan, whether it has been short term use or long term use, report experiencing Ativan withdrawal symptoms even while still on the drug.

What is Ativan Withdrawal?

Our benzo detox centers programs from Los Angeles to West Palm Beach understands how difficult it is to get off of Ativan. Ativan withdrawal is a result of the body and brain being in tolerance and experiencing inter dose withdrawals. This means that the patient is having Ativan withdrawals in between doses and experiencing uncomfortable symptoms between doses. Many times the patients dosage gets increased to minimize these Ativan withdrawal symptoms eventually leading to the same vicious cycle of increasing and then reaching tolerance at the newly increased dose.

Not all patients in Ativan withdrawal experience this. Some may take the same dosage of the medication for years. Others may not be so lucky and the central nervous system and brain become physically dependent on this benzo. Ativan withdrawal symptoms mimic many of the other benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms. Ativan withdrawal symptoms include some of the following.

  • worsening anxiety
  • panic
  • psychosis
  • insomnia
  • agoraphobia
  • tachycardia
  • chronic fatigue
  • depression
  • suicidal ideation
  • akathisia
  • and more.
